The name of the game is Marlowe!
Well folks, here's The Boar's Head Tavern's very first reading club! Please reply to this thread if you want to read Doctor Faustus with us, and include a general window of time in which you can read him (i.e. "Not before April15th. I've got taxes to do!", or "Not after May 1st. I'm moving", etc). Please also let me know if you have both the A and B texts available to you, and which you'd prefer to read, or would you prefer both? It's okay if you've read Faustus before. Just be ready to rediscover it with us, scene by scene!

Doctor Faustus is an excellent choice. I've never read it, but I'm very intrigued by evil. I can't begin reading it until after I graduate, which is May 12. After that, I should have some time.

So who's up for starting on Faustus? At last count, I remember Desdamona, Ganymede, and I were all in. Let me know when you're all ready to start. I know a lot of folks have exams and finals coming up.

Yay Faustus! Ready when you guys are. As for A or B texts, I'll have to check.

You can access both texts from the first link on the new resources page. I remember the B text being more fun (perhaps A was butchered by the same editor who removed the fun scenes from Tamburlaine) but I can't remember the other ways in which they differed. Is there a reason it's the "B" text (as in, not as likely to be right?) or was it just the second version they found?
By the way, IF ANYONE ELSE WANTS TO JOIN THIS CLUB, PLEASE LET US KNOW SOON!. I'm itching to get started, but I don't want to leave anyone behind. You don't have to have read the play before or even be familiar with Marlowe to be a part of it. Just reply to this thread and let me know when you'll have time to start.
Thanks!

Okay, I really want to join you all, but I don't have time until June 22 (end of exam period)... Can you wait that long?

Well since this group was your idea, maybe we can move onto another play and then come back to this when you're ready. I know Ganymede could use some more time before starting too. Let's see what Nolablue5 thinks. We could put Faustus on the back burner and start something else. Suggestions always welcome

The other possibility would be just taking it slowly. Could you handle an act a night? Maybe even just a scene? If you're over-taxed, it's no problem. But if you'd be up for that, I would expect to take at least a week to read it anyway. We've all got busy schedules around here.

I would be interested in participating, and the May 12th start date is fine for me

Yeah, maybe that'll work, taking it slowly. I can't sleep without having read a few pages anyway May 12 works for me too then.

You guys do realize May 12 is Mother's Day, right? Not that I won't be able to get the reading in, but some people might have plans. Though the general vicinity of May 12 is ok with me.

I think Ganymede suggested that day because it's when she graduates, but we could probably get underway once her finals are over (May 7th, I think). I'll ask her to post here and let us know, herself. Her classes and finals have also been the reasons we haven't seen much of her around here lately

Hey man, I try to make it when I can!
May 7th is fine with me. I should be done with finals by then.

Just a reminder to you all that we'll begin Doctor Faustus on May 7th. For those of you with busy schedules, we'll aim for two scenes a day. If we find that we can do better than that, we'll up it to an Act a day, but we'll see how we do first. Please post your thoughts to the scenes you read in the Shakespeare's Contemporaries discussion.
Getting excited! ;D
