I'm at such a confusing point in my life right now. Just felt like venting.
it's so weird. Ganymede and I are married now, we've taken time off from the "paved road to careerdom" in order to explore ourselves, and it's worked. We've really discovered some strong spirituality that's made our lives so much better, spent a lot of time together, adopted a GREAT cat, and now we're just loving every moment of life.
But there's always a but.
We can't get jobs, no matter how many places we apply to. The economy sucks right now and every job offering has fifty applicants for one position. We've already run down most of our savings from our Wedding gifts and money is running out. I know money isn't supposed to matter, but this is scary. Ganymede's college loans come due in November, and even if we can get them differed, we still have no income to cover our rent and food.
I've spent forever working on a resource for a web page of mine that's rapidly becoming a book. Maybe I could sell it, but even that won't bring in the kind of money we need.
I guess things could be a lot worse. We have a lot to be thankful for. But why does life always have to be such a mixed bag??

Hey guys, I completely understand. My husband and I went through a period some years ago when he had retired from a 25 year job, but expected to continue working as a consultant to bring in the bucks. He's an engineer and a damn good one, so expected no problem. Wrong! We had his pension to tide us over, but when the consulting jobs failed to come in we were at a loss. After over a year he got a nice job in his field, but the economy did not keep up to his expertise. That job lasted only about 7 months and then we had to start over again. After almost another year, and money running out, we realized that, when you need the money, it doesn't matter what you do, just work. He ended up working at Macy's for about 3 years, which got us over the hump. He then got lucky and got a great job with a wonderful engineering firm. He's been there for a number of years now, just retired again BUT with a contract with that same firm to continue there on a consulting basis. Just what we wanted. Finally. The point being that, for the moment, it may be necessary to look for a job in another field to tide you over. My daughter worked for a while as a temp, doing office work, data entry, etc. and from that got a permanent job at a place she's now been with for years. I have other friends who had the same experience. There are temp agencies who specialize in specific fields. Teaching may not be one of them, but I'll bet Library jobs fall into one of those catagories. Other areas may as well. Never look down at any job that gets you one step further down the road. The right job will come along when the time is right. Till then, happiness comes from exploring where you are and discovering what there is to learn in new and strange places and experiences. Enjoy the journey - getting there is half the fun!

Thanks so much. I really needed to hear that. You're absoultely right about taking what comes. We've been selective so far, but we're getting ready to become less selective when the last of our job interviews is completed. Employment in general is very tough around here, but I know I could always get a job at Target or something. Really, I don't have any pride issues with seeking lower employment. I'm just concerned about having a work environment that I will enjoy; one that won't force me to bring home negative energy each day. I suppose you get what you put in, and in that sense, we should be fine. I suppose things do have a way of working out. I was particularly worried about money today when a large bill arrived, and within an hour my mother called out of the blue to tell me that some bonds I had recieved as gifts when much younger were coming due to the amount of $3, 500. Someone somewhere is telling me not to worry, so I'll take that advice Thanks again. I really appreciate it.

I certainly empathize with your dilemma. Both my wife and I are actors which means we rarely know what we are going to be doing more than a couple of months in advance. Sometimes the season gets booked up and you can relax for a year. It's something we have kind of gotten used to - the ebb and flow of work and money. In one sense it's easier for people like us because we go into this line of work with an expectation of periodic unemployment. We are raising two kids and have a house but you really have to trust that something will come up to take care of the bills.
Happiness? Take Perdita.
Camillo: ....Besides you know, Prosperity's the very bond of love, Whose fresh complexion and whose heart together Affliction alters.
Perdita: One of these is true: I think affliction may subdue the cheek, But not take in the mind.

Yes, it's a tough market. I wish you the best of luck. My girl and I went through the same thing a year ago. We left everything behind and went to Mexico. Coming back we realised that -though not very romantic- money makes the world go round. In the end I had to swallow my pride and beg my old job back. But we're making progress and things are starting to look prosperous. Soon we will conquer the world, as will you.

You're absolutely right, both of you. it's all in the balance. We'll, we've enjoyed one (pleasruable) extreme for several months now. It's time to compromise and earn some money. Then we'll conquer the world. Shall we start with Harflour or Tewksbury?

Score one for Lord3's investigative skills Ganymede and I both have jobs now, and they're okay for the moment. They pay the bills, but they do take away much of our time and energy, and may not be the career paths we ultimately choose to pursue. It's only been two weeks since we both started (she at a daycare, me at a really lousy library) so we'll see how it goes :/
