I really like what Julie Taymour (sp?) did with Titus. She took a lesser known play and turned it into a fascinating study of history, merging artifacts from different time periods and capturing the essence of war and politics, while at the same time exploring family dynamics and individual insanity. And also it was darn funny to see Anthony Hopkins in a chef hat, smiling devilishly after slicing Tamara's two signs and turning them into pies.

Absolutely! She also used very strong camera work and special effects, and most of all, I give her credit for buidling up the character of Young Lucius and adding a rich layer to the play that would not have been there, otherwise.
My other favorite would be Loncraine's Richard III, starring Ian McKellan. The strong look and overall cinematography aside, this was a FUN film! McKellan makes the most lovable yet contemptable Machiavel I have ever seen, and little details, like turning Marlowe's "The Passionate Shephard to His Lover" into a pop jazz piece, or having Richard begin his speach publicly and finish it in a bathroom stall, lit a small fire in me. And then there's that amazing moment where Richard, a man who is always playing to an audience, first notices the audience in the bathroom mirror and turns to give that hungry look. If you havn't seen this film, you must!

Richard and Titus were good, but my all time favorite is definitely Branagh's Much Ado. That aside, I think Trevor Nunn's Twelfth Night is brilliant. Every time I see it I love it more; it's a warm and funny version that acknowledges the darker side of 12th Night, really brings out the Toby-Maria-Sir Andrew relationship, and does wonders with Viola and Orsino. Ben Kingsley as Feste is a marvel. If you haven't seen it , you really should.
