If you were to do a film adaptation of a Renaissance drama (whether Shakespeare or other), which would you choose and how would you cast it? feel free to reply to this more than once. if you have more than one idea.
I would do Shakespeare's entire second Henriad (Rchard II, 1 Henry IV, 2 Henry IV, Henry V); perhaps release one film each summer. Here's how I'd cast it, assuming these actors can actually speak the lines and have some idea of what they're saying. I chose many of these actor because they seemed perfect for how I envision the play. However, it was hard to think of actors for certain parts, so don't hate me for making a few uncreative choices. I just couldn't think of a better choice at the time.
Richard II Richard -- Mark Rylance Isabelle -- Kate Hudson John of Gaunt -- Donald Sutherland Bolingbroke -- Tom Skerritt Duchess of Gloucester -- Maggie Smith York -- James Woods Aumurle -- Robert Sean Leonard Mowbray -- Wallace Shawn
1 Henry IV Henry IV -- Tom Skerritt Prince Harry -- Elijah Wood Falstaff -- Ian McKellan Northumberland -- Derek Jacobi Hotspur -- Owen Wilson
2 Henry IV Henry IV -- Tom Skerritt Prince Harry -- Elijah Wood Falstaff -- Ian McKellan Northumberland -- Derek Jacobi Bardolph -- Steve Buscemi Poins -- John Goodman Pistol -- John Turturro
(Still working on Henry V)

Elijah Wood as Hal...wow.
Interesting.
Elijah seems a bit too Puckish to me, but then again I saw him most recently in Lord of the Rings, so I have this hobbit-sized-person in my head.
He has the charisma for it, thought, and the mischief. I can see where you're coming from.
I'll have to think about my own ideal casting in a play a bit more. I want KB to play Angelo in Measure for Measure, but I don't know about the rest of the cast....

Emma Thomson might have made a wonderful Isabella. Too bad she and KB no longer work nor live together By the way, seeing as how you love Measure for Measure so much, why not start a topic or two about it in The Plays? We haven't given it anywhere near enough attention yet.

Yeah, I could see Emma Thompson as Isabella; she strikes me as a warmer character, but she's played a lot of frigid, restrained roles. I'd pictured Isabella as a much younger woman, but Emma would be wonderful as well.
Measure for Measure post...good idea! I'll do that.
