Thanks for the warm congratulations, Juliet! Sounds like you're having some exciting times, yourself. Directing As You Like It sounds like a fantastic experience for you!
Side note : Interesting to note that many experts now claim Dostoevski (Crime and Punishment) is a terrible prose writer in the original Russian, and that his translator is largely responsible for his fame in America. I've always found that aspect of translated works fascinating. How much of what you're reading comes from the actual author? I often wonder how our authors translate into different languages. How would Shaky's word play and double entoundras play out?

Okay, I know this is not the perfect place to start about Crime and Punishment, but I really need to have my say : I read the book for the first time last year and at the time I liked it, but when I read it again recently, I started to almost resent it with every page I read. The Dutch translator is probably just not as skilled as the English translator I guess; I wish I were a native English speaker...

You seem to speak and understand English very well though. Honestly, I never would have guessed it wasn't your first language. Can't you order an english version from the internet?

Desdemona, I feel your pain. I once started on the Dutch translation and got bored out of my skull. Then I read the English translation and it was absolutely marvellous. I have always wondered about the Dutch title too. Translated into English it is Fault and Fine. That's not exactly Crime and Punishment now is it?

I could order an English version, that's true. But really, do you think I have the courage to read the full 782 pages AGAIN? I've had it for now, you know. I love reading, but I think I won't read that book ever again! I No matter how great the English version may be

Congratulations Shaxper and Ganymede! That's wonderful! And hello to Juliet, sounds like you'll love it here! Y'know, I didn't really think about where you all came from. Rainy old England isn't too good, but I live in Southampton which has some Shakespeare connections as it is mentioned in some of the plays. *Visibly grasps at straws*

Shakespeare's patron, and possibly the Youth in the sonnets, was the Earl of Southampton.

Thanks so much for all your congratulations! And I must apologize for not being on the board as often as I would have liked. Planning a wedding is tough work! But now that the actual wedding is over (as of Sunday), I hope to be on more often, at least until we make it to Italy, and then, who knows? But I'm sure Shaxper and I will try our best to keep up with the site no matter where we end up!

Congratulations! Wonderful to see true dorks get together. May I ask about Italy?
*bows to the room* Me, I'm a transgendered bibliophile from west of the Mississippi, where I live in a hotel my great-great-grandfather built in 1890 and work on two novels that are nothing alike, then drive to another town and drudge as a paralegal to pay the bills. I talk about going to graduate school the same way my grandmother used to talk about "next year in Jerusalem." Interests include: taking my puppet-packing 13-year-old sister to performances of Renaissance drama whenever I can; Ani DiFranco, Tori Amos and anything off the Red House label; book collecting; the two Proboards sites I administer (Trap Door for fans of Harry Potter; Glenmore for dorks who met at Trap Door); computers; cartography; coming up with clever systems and theories; and random acts of silliness.
